As Sunbathers Ran From Danger, Viral Photo Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, describes the famous beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, heard loud noises ringing out across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a couple who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the path that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He moved towards something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and medical teams caring for numerous victims.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the location of the violence becoming a makeshift medical station. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, including entering the ocean to save people in distress.

In the days after the tragedy, statements of support circulated widely. An online statement conveyed thanks for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The team of beach patrol later shared a communication, explaining they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful sentiments and support. We are overwhelmed by the care for our personnel,” the organization commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many permanent lifeguards, stated that the crew rose to the occasion from the moment the violence started until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many moving narratives, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a local official.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous beaches protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much positivity we have seen in the face of such hatred.”
