There are many candidates to claim the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, building a simple trading ship necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” notes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber could be produced within seven days.”
Owing to this rapid automated saw, that converted timber to boards with virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build vessels faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, financial as well as artistic dominance across the continent and the world.
The Original True Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component transformed the rotary motion into up-and-down motion to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward one precise increment each cycle.
“Each element was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that they acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every descending stroke and moving on every return motion. It was a remarkably clever use of fundamental parts.”
