Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their release of a contentious video.
The Recording That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, released on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in defense or defense capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to protect and uphold this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that violate the law or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Response
The video message reportedly prompt a angry reply from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a joint statement condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our United States with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these unhinged social media posts and retract his violent discourse before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Officials' Defiant Answer
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a response.
"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who value this country and made an vow to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the president considers it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the former president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."
Further Partisan Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the death of elected officials."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the president's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can cause casualties, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally supporting."
