Fury Surges as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism
Individuals from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
“What a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. She pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Political Ranks
Some GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
