Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 elections conclude.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor commented when pressed about contemplating a presidential run after the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

The governor's current term as governor concludes in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Political Adversary

Newsom has emerged as a notable adversary of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and advocating for a proposition that would increase the party's representation in Congress in response to redistricting by Republicans. This move has made him a target from critics.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced plans to withhold federal funds from California and suggested suspending the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," he stated, following a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to loss of life and injured individuals.

His administration noted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to secure a trucking license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before announced he was holding back $40m from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a recent release countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Political Future

A this month's poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has risen to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The idea that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I await who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
