The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
