The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

The world mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and actor whose distinctive voice was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his life’s path. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff was beloved for hit songs such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and positive spirit earned him a vast and loyal fanbase.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, including Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
