The Legendary Williams, Awarded Special Entry for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

Latest Personal Milestone

In late December, Williams wed Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
