The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
