Wealthy businessman Jared Isaacman has been confirmed as the new administrator of NASA, concluding an extraordinary selection saga where Trump put his name forward, pulled the nomination, and then put him forward again.

The billionaire, an aviation enthusiast who was the first non-professional astronaut to conduct a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in a generation to come straight from the private sector.

For many, the success of his leadership will be determined by one crucial test: if NASA can return humans to the lunar surface before China.

Trump has stated explicitly a goal for the America to establish a permanent lunar base, both to allow for resource extraction and to serve as a staging point for missions to the Red Planet.

Confirmation Vote and Nomination Drama

On Wednesday, the Senate confirmed the nomination with a bipartisan vote.

Trump first withdrew the nomination in the spring, referencing a "thorough review of previous relationships".

At the point, the president was engaged in a dispute with the SpaceX CEO, one of his largest political donors, with whom Isaacman has a working relationship.

Isaacman says he is now completely supportive of Trump's mission to extract lunar resources, creating a divergence from Elon Musk, who has said that lunar missions is a detour from the primary objective of reaching Mars.

Vision for NASA

In the present global space race, nations are competing to tap into the lunar surface.

“Now is not the time for hesitation but a time for decisive steps because if we lose ground, if we make a mistake, we may never catch up, and the results could alter the global dynamics here on Earth,” Isaacman told lawmakers earlier this month.

The business leader sees introducing more private sector competition as essential for meeting those objectives, according to a recently disclosed paper laying out his plan for NASA.

In his confirmation hearing, he supported the strategy, which he developed when he was first nominated, but noted it was a developing document.

His support for competition could also cause friction with Musk. Recently, Isaacman praised the granting of a significant agreement to Blue Origin, which is one of the few rivals of SpaceX.

In the strategy paper, he suggested the agency should increasingly partner with universities and academic institutions, casting the agency as a "amplifier for research".

He highlighted the planned deployment of the Roman Telescope as a prime illustration.

"Should we be on the verge of something groundbreaking - like launching Roman - I will explore every option to make it happen, even using my own resources if that's what it takes to produce the discoveries," he stated.

Background and Net Worth

According to reports, his wealth is estimated at approximately 1.2 billion dollars, accumulated through his financial services firm and the divestment of his business that trained pilots and operated a collection of military aircraft.

The top job at NASA will be his first job in public office, a departure from the immediate predecessors appointed as NASA chief.

He will replace the former transportation secretary, who has acted as acting administrator since the summer.
